The Insurance Fraud Bureau estimates that 30,000 “crash for cash” incidents – for example, when a driver slams on their brakes to make a following car hit them – take place every year.(Sunday Times Driving)
Having a recording of an accident helps with attributing blame and protects the innocent motorist. Some insurance companies offer a discount if a car is fitted with a dash cam.
Dash cams avoid the problem of running out of video space by deleting the oldest files automatically. They split the recordings into smaller pieces. Important video can be saved, either by pressing abutton orif the camera detects a sudden decellaration that might be an accidenthappening. Eventually space will be filled up with saved video, so download is necessary.
Dash cams should intrude no more than 40mm into the swept area of your windscreen wiper blades and must not be mounted in the area directly above the steering wheel.
